Just Something I Noticed
Ok, so if you know me you know that I'm a HUGE sci-fi/action/superhero movie fan. Most specifically, a Marvel movie fan. However, I can't deny that DC's "The Dark Knight Rises" was one of the best movies of 2012, or the past 4-5 years, along with Marvel's "The Avengers."
While I must say that Marvel did a superior job of setting up "The Avengers" by creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, The Dark Knight Trilogy wasn't too shabby, mainly because of the last two films. While I thoroughly enjoy both franchises, there is one thing I've noticed about DC's films that I have yet to see (and don't expect to see) in Marvel's films...
The upstaging of the hero.
If you take a look back at the Dark Knight movies (most importantly the last two, the best two), what holds most weight, at least to me, are the villains, The Joker and Bane. Granted, The Joker had a lot of hype due to the death of Heath Ledger, which doesn't take away from his absolutely fantastic performance in the least. However, when I first watched "The Dark Knight Rises", I didn't expect to be more intrigued by the overall badassness of Bane more than the journey of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Don't get me wrong, I do believe it was a great conclusion to the story, and the writing in that movie, specifically regarding Bruce Wayne, was amazing. It's just that the brawn AND brain of Bane was overpowering...at least to me. Even with The Joker, his speech to Harvey Dent in the hospital ALONE made that movie darker than it had been at any point before that. And let's not forget the infamous pencil scene! He had more memorable moments in the movie than the hero.
That's something you don't see in Marvel movies. It's all about the hero; his/her journey, turmoil, and triumph. Let's pick "Iron Man", easily the most popular franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In both of the movies (so far) it's mainly about Tony Stark, what he's going through personally and how he uses that to defeat his enemy. Ok, I'll admit that Tony Stark is easily the most badass superhero in the MCU. Let's refer to a much less popular movie: The Hulk (the one with Edward Norton). Even still, his struggles with his other half and how it affects his normal life is the focus of the movie.
Now, I haven't said, decided, or even put a ton of thought into which scenario is better or more effective. Maybe I'm biased towards the Marvel movies...ok I am. Either way, maybe it's a studio thing (decisions made by DC and Marvel) or maybe it's a director thing (which is less likely due to the amount of different directors that have worked on the MCU movies). Not a critique or anything, just something I noticed.
But I can say this: Scarlett Johansen as Black Widow was WAAAYYYYY hotter than Anne Hathaway as Catwoman ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Out.
