Rex (me) on Volume 2: LOST
Rex on Volume 2: LOST:
"On this mixtape, I wanted to force myself to dig a little bit deeper. On Volume 1: Heroes, I rapped about cliche things like money, flashy stuff, things that someone would expect to hear on your everyday hip-hop mixtape. You know, lyrics about whatever, no real subject. With this one (Volume 2: LOST), I actually have subject matter that relates to a lot of different aspects in my life. I talk about me and the situations I find myself in. For example, I wrote a verse that pretty much explains how I felt when I decided to take a semester off from school, I have another record about why I refuse to settle down and date. It's all really personal. Don't get me wrong, it's not all serious and emotional or anything. I'll have some of your "classic" rap joints on there, a couple funny joints. But overall, I think it'll be noticably deeper.
Honestly, I've only listened to V1:H maybe once all the way through. You know, I'm proud of it. It's my first ever mixtape, the first and only tracks where it's me rapping. I think it's because of that I haven't listened to it more. I wouldn't say I'm not pleased with it. I just really feel that I've gotten a lot better since then. Whether it be lyrical content, my tone, my inflection, the actual quality of the recordings. I just feel like I've learned a lot since starting that whole process.
With [V2:L], I think I'm going to put a lot more effort into promoting it. I'm going to put forth more effort in every aspect actually. I don't feel like this is something I can settle with, you know? Everything has to be perfect, if not, as close as possible. But I want a lot of people to hear this because I feel like a lot of people my age will be able to relate. I'm going to try to get some powerful promotional teams behind it. I'm definately going to shop it around. Also, I feel like this will be a good opportunity to put my production skills on the map. Not really as far as making beats, but more putting together an album and even as far as engineering. I actually recorded and mixed all of V1:H. Same with [Joshua King]. He makes a ton of beats for me. Actually, all the original beats I've ever rapped over, they've been his. He also has engineering and mixing skills. So all-in-all, I think putting out V2:L in wider market would help us both out.
As far as features go, I have a few in mind but I don't have anything solid just yet. I mean, you'll definitely hear Josh on a couple verses, but I want to venture outside of people I'm cool with and people I'm used to working with. I'm going to try to contact some people around Columbia, SC, some people that have made a name for themselves in the local scene. I have a few ideas and some contacts. We'll just have to see what works out.
Release date? I don't like release dates. I haven't set one just yet. I feel like putting a stopping point to a creative process that isn't finished yet becomes too stressful. It takes away from the potential and feeling of what you're trying to produce. That's exactly what happened with V1:H. I locked myself in the studio the day I was supposed to release it [February 14] just cramming in verses. I was in there for like 12 hours! I'm sure some of those songs could've turned out a lot better had I given myself more time to listen and tweek things. I have an idea of when I'd like it to be out but I'm not setting anthing in stone. Also, depending on my features and what kind of promotional shit we do, who knows when it'll actually see light? It won't be too long though. Definitely before Summer."
